[Catholic Church] Eligibility

Admissions and Registration

Criteria for Admission to
a Toronto Catholic School

Catholic children may be admitted at the local elementary school. Parents should contact the principal about the necessary documents, which include a birth certificate, Catholic baptismal certificate and proof of residency.

Non-Catholic children of Catholic parents, all residing in the City of Toronto, may be admitted at the local elementary school. Parents should contact the principal to determine eligibility, which will include verification of a parent's Catholicity and eligibility to be separate school supporters.

Catechumens may be admitted at the local elementary school. Parents should contact the principal about the necessary documents, which include verification from the parish priest.

Non-Catholic children of non-Catholic parents are not eligible for admittance to Toronto Catholic District School Board elementary schools.

TCDSB secondary schools are open to all students residing in the City of Toronto.

Non-Toronto students, who are residents in Ontario, may be admitted to TCDSB secondary school without payment of a fee if there is space available.

New Permanent Residents should make an appointment at the Orientation Centre, 700 Markham Street, Toronto (416-393-5500) to register for secondary school programs.  Website: www.tcdsb.org/oc

For further information on any of the above, or the requirements for any Immigration status not listed, call the Admissions and Placement Department at 416-222-8282, ext. 5320.

Registration for kindergarten and French immersion begins in February. For information on Kindergarten and French Immersion, contact your closest Catholic elementary school. Along with proof of residency in Toronto (i.e. utility bill), the following documents for your child will be required at time of registration:

  • Proof of Canadian citizenship (Canadian birth certificate) or Landed Immigrant papers

  • Catholic baptismal certificate (proof of Catholicity)

  • Ontario Health Card

  • Record of immunization

Secondary school admission process

In early November 2009, Catholic Secondary School Application Forms will be sent to all TCDSB elementary schools for grade 8 students to apply for grade 9 placement within the Toronto Catholic District School Board beginning September 2010. The completed forms are then returned by the grade 8 teachers to the Admissions & Placement Department on the specified due date in late November.

Parents are cautioned every year to make an informed choice by talking to their elementary school principal about their child's needs and attending the secondary school open house in their area.  Once the reports have been sent out to the secondary schools with the list of applicants, nothing can be changed on these reports until March 2010, by which time the secondary schools have made their initial selection and changes might not be possible due to space limitations.

The 뱊o sooner date this year will be in February 2010.  This is the very first date that any secondary school can notify students of their acceptance for grade 9 in September 2010.

When the student receives his/her acceptance package from the secondary school, he/she is asked to complete an option sheet to confirm the intention to attend that school and to pick courses for grade 9.

If the student is not accepted due to oversubscription from students in the area, the redirection process begins, with every student being offered an alternative placement at the closest secondary school that still has available space.

Students who apply to a secondary school out of their area are giving up their right of acceptance to their local secondary school.  By the time they receive confirmation from their school of choice, their local secondary school might already be filled. The student would not gain automatic acceptance to their area school.

Information for Foreign/Visa Students Seeking Admission
to TCDSB Catholic schools

Application for elementary school student | Application for secondary school student

Foreign/visa students applying to TCDSB elementary schools (junior kindergarten to grade 8) must be Catholic with proof of their baptism, and they must reside in city of Toronto. As of January 23, 2008, non-Catholic foreign students can now apply to secondary schools within the Toronto Catholic District School Board and again, must reside in the city of Toronto if placed. Prior to this amendment, only Catholic foreign students could apply to our secondary schools. The Toronto Catholic District School Board does not provide boarding facilities within it's secondary schools.

If space is available, all our schools accept foreign students.

Application for elementary school student

The following steps are to be taken for a child applying for an elementary school (ages 4 to 13)

  • Contact the school principal closest to the address where the child will be living, requesting a letter stating that if everything is done properly through Immigration and the Admissions Department, "there would be space in the school for a foreign student". Mention to the principal that you have been speaking to the Admissions & Placement Department.
  • Once the letter has been obtained, contact Laura Tench, Supervisor, Admissions & Placement Department, at 416-222-8282, ext. 2383 to set up an appointment.
  • The following documents must be provided at the time of the appointment: the letter from the principal as noted above, the child’s Catholic baptismal certificate (translated into English if necessary), the child’s birth certificate, the child’s immunization record, and proof of residency in Toronto for the family the child will be living with. This proof could be a driver’s license, a telephone bill, a bank statement, etc.
  • The foreign student fee for an elementary-aged child for the school year 2009-2010 is $10,750.00 (1/2 fee for a Junior or Senior Kindergarten child ages 4 or 5). This fee is subject to change and payable when the appointment is set up with the Admissions Department.
  • A letter is issued by the Admissions Department for the family to apply for a Study Permit. The Study Permit must be presented to the Admissions Department prior to the first day of school. Junior & Senior Kindergarten children are exempt from this requirement. All other foreign students from grade 1 to 8 must have this Study Permit in order to attend a TCDSB school. If they are denied, all monies will be refunded to the family.

Application for secondary school student

The following steps are to be taken for a child applying for a secondary school (ages 14 to 18):

  • All students applying for a secondary school are put on a waiting list. Catholic foreign students will be placed on a priority #5 waiting list; non-Catholic foreign students will be placed on a priority #7 waiting list.
  • The applications are available through the Admissions & Placement Department, of the Toronto Catholic District School Board at 80 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • When application is made, the following documents must be attached: if applying as a Catholic applicant, a copy of the student's Catholic baptismal certificate (translated into English if necessary), and proof of Toronto residency for the family the student will be living with if accepted. An example of this is a telephone bill for the family, a hydro bill, ownership/lease for the family home, etc.
  • When, and if, the student is accepted, the foreign student fee is payable. The foreign student fee for a secondary school in the 2009-2010 school year is $12,000.00. An acceptance letter will then be issued by the Admissions & Placement Department in order for the student to apply for a Study Permit, which must be presented prior to the first day of school. If the student is denied this Study Permit, all monies will be refunded.

If you would like to proceed with an application and need further clarification, please E-mail to laura.tench@tcdsb.org.
